So, I'm watching Jeopardy, like I do most week nights @ 7pm, and there's a category named 'Word and Phrase Origins.' The answers were mostly of Greek or Latin origin.

Cool, I'm learning a few words.

The $2000 answer said 'These two words were combined in the 1970 to form the word ebonics.'

The answer is . . . .

Ebony and Phonics.

What.
The.
F*CK.

I'm sorry, am I the only one who is shocked, appalled and a little disgusted by that? Not at Jeopardy. I love me some Trebek lol But wow. Ebony? Whoa. Did anyone else know this? Maybe I'm new to the party but that's the first time I've ever heard that.

This morning I woke up about an hour before I had to get out of bed and my mind to started to wander and think about everything that's going wrong or not perfect in my life. I dwelled on these things for a while and started to feel so down. . .

But then.

But then I thought of how good I have it, compared to so many others. No one's life is perfect; no one can ever BE perfect. But we all know when we have it pretty good. And there are always little things that WE can do to make things better.

I thanked God for my blessings, said a prayer for what I needed/wanted and kept it moving.

No matter what you believe, be thankful and keep it moving.

The Dark Knight - no spoilers

Ladies and gentlemen, I have seen the light. And it's name is The Dark Knight. In IMAX. Hands down the best movie of the year. Now, it's no secret that I love love love me some caped crusader so I was going to enjoy the movie either way but I really didn't expect it to live up to all the hype. And believe me, it surpassed it. The film is chock full of incredible acting talent, so even thought Bale is the 'star,' each actor has such an integral role in the storyline and they all had a good amount of screen time. *gushes* I'm so happy I saw it in IMAX. You should too!! :-)

Surprise visit!

OMG so while I was posting the last survey I was super cranky. It was a reflective type thing, so I was re-hashing my year which was full of ups and downs. But then I got a surprise visit from my friend Frantz! I met him a little over a year ago at my workplace. He's such a sweetheart. He moved to Japan in January '07 to teach English. Not telling anyone he was back, he's been surprising his friends for the past few days and stopped by my apartment. It was so good to see him. We only talked for 20 mins; he's been back for 2 days and is still jet-lagged. I'll definitely be seeing him before he goes back in January '08 and can't wait to talk more about the culture and his experiences in Japan. It was so refreshing to see him. I am in SUCH a great mood right now. I know I promised a bit of a rant, recapping my year, but I'm too happy to do that right now! LOL

Ok people, here's another minor update. I participated in the graduation ceremony at the University of South Florida on Saturday!! It's official, I'm done with undergrad. Mama's got a BA in English Lit.!! :-) A heap of the fam is in town, so I've been running around like a chicken with its head cut off for the past few days. And this job situation is screwy...after the second interview on Monday they said they would call me the same day, but no call yet. :-( I'm about to call them right now...I'll keep ya posted. So, after this week, I'll have more time to update my life here on the journal and I'm going to post an album so you guys can see my graduation picks. I must say, I looked pretty dern cute! LOL

I'm sitting here on a lovely Sunday afternoon. Currently sprawled out on my bed, I've spent the morning cleaning my room and now I'm procrastinating about the last paper I have to type in my undergraduate career (it's only a 2-pager due by midnight) and watching 'Waiting to Exhale' for the umpteenth-millionth time (love this flick). And I'm also listening to a playlist on my mp3 player entitled 'My Girls.' This particular list has some of the most soulful, truthful voices of the 20th century. Now, by no means is this a complete list of female vocalists that I find amazing, but it's good enough for me right now. The list includes Corinne Bailey Rae, India Arie, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill. Their voices are rich; their lyrics are real. And as the songs go from 'Put Your Records On' (Corinne Bailey Rae) to 'Blues for Mama,' (Nina Simone) I follow the emotional ups and downs with my own voice. The soul stirring feeling I get from these ladies is amazing. Anytime, day or night, these are the songs I'm singing. 'Ready for Love' (India Arie), 'Drama' (Erykah Badu) and 'Everything is Everything' (Lauryn Hill) help to make up this compilation of songs that make me appreciate the woman that I am. They give my voice reason to be heard. I encourage you all to have a selection of music like this, comprised of singers that give your heart a boost and your soul a 'dusting off,' so to speak.

(Break: Angela Basset just lit her no good husband's shit on fire in the movie...MY GIRL!!!!!!!! :-)

So yeah, just thought I'd share.

Well, I think Shana and Wash would convice Mal to go to a karaoke bar/restaurant type thingy. Shana would talk about Wash getting some new shirts, Wash would ask her how she kept her hair so colorful and if she thinks his wife would look good with it. Mal would just sit there in disbelief, throwing back one whiskey after another.

Mmmm...They both put up a good fight for a while...but in the end I think Methos would take Spike's head.

Ok, this one's kinda weird 'cause they're like the same person...Zoe would probably take Nebula's weapon, just to see if she could fight well with a sword. Nebula would probably hold Wash hostage until she got the sword back.

Charity screening of 'Serenity'

I just returned from the Tampa Charity screening of 'Serenity' with the proceeds going to Equality Now, which is Joss Whedon's pet charity. It was hella cool!! A couple people showed up in costume, Browncoat/Serenity shirts were everywhere and they even had a raffle!! I didn't win anything, but it was still good :-) The organizers even gave out little goody bags at the end of the show. The bags included a red Equality Now wristband and a Firefly trading card that came in plastic sleeves. I had a blast!! It was like we were all a family. During the movie, everyone laughed at the right parts, cheered at the right parts and *sniff* whimpered at the right parts. I'm not sure how much money was raised but it was a full house. A great time was had by all.

It was U-day. Again. And Mal had gone looking for a fight. Again. Zoe loved her husband but she was getting tired of this ridiculous and mighty painful tradition. No matter how hard she tried, those baby blues and that smart mouth always seemed to convince her to go out for a friendly drink come this day every year.

They sat in their bunk aboard Serenity, nursing fresh bruises.

"If you think you're getting any tonight, you can just forget it."

"C'mon Zo! We got them hun dans good! Besides, we've done stuff with worse wounds than this." He kissed her shoulder and tried to put the moves on his wife. She avoided him and moved to the other side of the bed.

"It's not funny, Mal. This is the last time I'm doing this. Picking a fight every year on the day we lost is not going to change the outcome of the war. I've accepted it and you need to do the same."

Mal dropped his eyes and stared at his hands. He ran a bandaged hand through his dirty brown hair and got up from the bed, standing with his back to her.

Damn. Zoe regretted her words immediately. She knew better. She stood and wrapped her arms around him from the back. He flinched forward a little but didn't break her embrace.

"Husband, I love you. I hate the war and I hate those blue bastards, but I love you. Making yourself hurt needlessly every year is no way to commemorate our fight."

Mal turned to his wife and placed a hand on her cheek. His eyebrows furrowed as he studied her face.

"I love you Zoe and I'm sorry. I shouldn't drag you into these things every year."

"Was that an apology?"

"Don't get too excited, that may be the last time you get one of those."

Zoe grinned.

"Have I ever told you how much apologies turn me on."

"Mmmm..." He kissed her neck. "I'm gonna have to keep that in mind."

He picked her up and took her back to the bed.

This particular U-day had a happy ending.

Oh! So me and the kid, Ryan, watched Star Wars the other day. It was my first ever viewing of the masterpiece and I must say one thing...

Could Malcolm Reynolds be anymore like Han Solo?!?!??! The demeanor, the way of speaking...everything. Hurray Harrison Ford! Especially in the last battle scene. :-) I grow as a sci-fi geek more and more each day...

SO! Today I begrudgingly attended my Math for Liberal Arts class. It's a huge auditorium class. This kid sits in the row behind me to my right and he's wearing a black Serenity shirt. I was so freakin excited but I didn't want him to think I was some big weirdo, so I waited a few minutes and casually looked over my shoulder.
"Hey, nice shirt."
"You know about Firefly?"
"Hell yeah, I'm a huge Browncoat."
"Me too!"
"I'm Sarah."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Ryan."
Both of us were so stunned that we had actually met someone else who loves the show. It was great! We talked about conventions, fan fics, fave episodes, everything. He actually met some of the cast at the last convention in Orlando is going to send me the pics. SOOOOO excited. This is his first semester here so I may play tour guide and all that good stuff. It was like, we kinda knew each other already because we share this obsession with Firefly/Serenity. Too funny. It pays off to wear your Browncoat merchandise! :-)

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

- My smile. *grins*
- My legs (they're super long and sexy. It’s summer, so short skirts here I come!!).
- My uncanny ability to be optimistic. Sometimes it's hard but I feel like being positive is my way of making the world a little better. (sappy, I know :-P) Plus, smiling lifts the face and makes you even more beautiful than you already are!

2. Recommend a great FF fic. Something you loved reading and would recommend that I check out too. (For the sake of this interview, it shouldn't be one that either you or I wrote).

LOL Definitely the 'Dino Tales' series at www.fireflyfans.net by ManicGiraffe (I'm not good at links and stuff, so if you go the site, go the Blue Sun Room and search fic titles for 'Dino Tales') They're so cute and funny; a nice light read.

3. What is one small, concrete action that you think a person can take to make the world (or their community or their home) a better place?

…*scratches head*

Not being complacent. Saying you want things to change is nice but actually acting on that desire is even nicer. Anything from sending monthly donations to a charity to participating in an equal rights rally. If everyone just did something, I think that the world would be one step closer to being a better place.

4. What do you miss most about the Bahamas?

Being surrounded by family. The islands are so small and my family has been there for generations, so I had aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc. all within a short car ride (or boat ride) away. Oh, and I also miss going to the library then to the beach everyday after school. :-)

5. Every Zoë/Wash fan seems to have their own take on when and how the two of them got together, despite her first opinion of him. What do you think happened?

I don’t like how people usually make Zoë out to be a complete bitch toward Wash in the beginning. Yeah, maybe there was some friction but I don’t think she really hated him; she just didn’t know what to make of her feelings for him, that’s all. And also, if he really liked her, like, love at first sight sort of thing, he was probably going overboard in trying to attract her to him, like he was showing out. Wash has a very silly personality and Zoë doesn’t. That obvious difference probably got in the way of them getting to know each other, initially. Zoë was might have been so caught up in what she didn’t think she wanted in a man that it interfered with her realization of what she could potentially love in a significant other. Make sense? Anyway, so after a few months on the ship Wash gets through to her. I don’t think it was some grand gesture or intense situation that pushed or threw them together. I mean, those kinds of things work well for fics, but it seems a little simpler to me. Wash finally calms down, realizing he doesn’t have to put on a show to impress Zoë. Zoë realizes that she owes it to herself to explore her feelings. Let’s say…somehow when the ship is docked, Zoë and Wash are left by themselves. They dance around each other in the kitchen for a while until someone breaks the ice. They talk and decide to date…well, date as much as you can on a spaceship. Things start of slowly but surely with none of that ‘having sex as soon as we know we like each other’ stuff either. Things bloom, they ‘do it’ (a lot) and then maybe six months down the road they get hitched.

1. Best peice of Firefly\Serenity fan fiction you've ever read. And why was it so great?

I can't even begin to answer this question! lol Oh man...anything with Zoe. I'm going to have to get back to you on that.

2. Why Mal & Zoe?

These two have the most history together. My love them as as a couple reflects alot of my own feelings. First of all, Nathan is such a hottie! lol Also, I feel like for any good relationship to work there has to be some history there. In an idealistic relationship, the two people must have gone through some events that bind them together. Obviously not as traumatic as a war, but the fact that they did go through that makes them inseparable. They even stuck together after the war when they could have split and created their own little lives. Mal and Zoe are great together. They act like they're married already, anyway.

3. Recall a funny story.

My friends and I were 15 and we saw some kids sneak into a movie theater. One kid bought a ticket and opened the back door for the other 3 kids. So we thought it would be cool to try it. So, we did the whole thing, exactly like we saw the other kids do it. We got away with it too! ...did I mention that we were so scared of getting caught, that before we 'sneaked in' we actually bought the tickets first, just in case! We were such geeks...

4. What's your "I'm pissed off!" music?

Usually Metallica, Disturbed, hardcore rap and rock. Anything nice and loud.

5. Am I the only one who thought Alan had a bit of a crush on Gina? ... Or maybe even Nathan? Or is it all in my head? (I know I cheat with more then one question, but I'm crazy like that :D)

Yeah, I think from the interviews, gag reels and outtakes from the series and the movie, Alan's a little sweet on Gina. But then again, who wouldn't be? As for Nathan, heh, who knows?

1) If you could only have seen 1 movie in your life, what would it be?

Aahh...it would have to be Leon: The Professional with Jean Reno and Natalie Portman. I first saw the movie when I was like 13, and it made me greatful that my life wasn't as bad as hers. Also, I realized, at such a young age, that love isn't restricted by age, race or any of those things. *sigh* Plus I just love foreign men. :-)

2) If you had to go through life deaf or blind, which would it be and why?

I would choose to go blind. Music is such an integral part of my life. Every mood has a soundtrack. Plus, I think being blind would limit my judgement of people and make me a sorta kind of a better person. (although I try not to do that now.)

3) What's the first thing you hope to hear God (or some other higher being) say when you get to heaven (assuming you believe in heaven or a simillar place)?

I forgive you. Welcome.

4) If you could relive any year of your life (not so much redoing it, just living it again), what would it be and why?

My first year of college at Fisk. It had it's ups and (way) downs but I feel like I grew so much that year. I'd like to relive that.

5) If you could make it so that every human being had one common belief, what would it be? This could be a belief system (like God) or something political etc.

(I'm hopped up on Starbucks coffee, so if some answers don't make sense, just roll with it...)

1) What was your first OTP (like ever in life, not just Firefly)?
Ok, I'm assuming OTP refers to like, a fandom or show I am/was obsessed with (I have no clue what OTP stands for LOL). If that's the case, then I'd probably say the tv show La Femme Nikita or Highlander. If that's wrong, then *embarassingly* please explain OTP...

2) Who was your first celebrity crush?
MacGyver's Richard Dean Anderson. There's something about a man who can make a bomb out of a watch battery, some chicken wire and chewing gum... I was the only 8 year old in life that carried a pocket knife.

3) If you could marry any celebrity, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
!! Ummm...this is such a hard question! Ok, either Gina Torres (yeah, I said it!) or Jake Gyllenhaal. Gina - I've admired her since I first saw her on Hercules waaaaay back in the day. She's strong, gorgeous, seems really nice, tall, and did I mention gorgeous? Jake - intelligent, amazing eyes, nice lips, great actor, super cute and he's kind of a homebody, like me :-) Oh, and duh, Denzel Washington a la Malcolm X. Wait...and Robert DeNiro a la Goodfellas...Can I be a polygamist?? LOL

4) What is your all-time favorite Shakespeare play and character?
ooohhh... Favorite play is Titus Andronicus. It's his first tragedy and you can see so many traits of his future great plays in this work. Well, before I say my favorite character, let me explain something. My favorite characters are more often than not villians. I admire the good (or mostly good)characters but they are never quite 'all good.' They all have flaws or commit some major act that makes me unsure of their 'righteous' status. Although, I rationalize that as being a true reflection of human nature; no one is all good or all bad. Plus, the villians are always more interesting. :-) So NOW, my favorite character is Tamora, Queen of the Goths, from Titus. She's all sex appeal, fiercely maternal and she knows what she wants and how to get it.

5) Who is your favorite author (no Shakespeare here, pick somone else) and/or what is your favorite work of literature?
Fine, if I had to pick someone other than Shakespeare it would have to be Michael Crichton. Not very 'Enlgish major-y' I know, but his work really captivates me. I really respect the amount of research he puts into his books and I've been reading him ever since I saw Jurassic Park in the theater when I was 10 and realized it was based on a book.
